Legal Entity Identifier — Global ID for Financial Transactions.
The LEI is a 20-character global identifier RBI now mandates for large-value transactions, cross-border remittances, and derivative trades. Here's what it is and who needs one.
Contact UsThe Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code, based on the ISO 17442 standard, that identifies a legal entity party to a financial transaction anywhere in the world. It was introduced globally after the 2008 financial crisis to improve transparency in financial markets, and is now mandated by the Reserve Bank of India for entities undertaking specified categories of transactions — large-value transactions through RTGS/NEFT above a threshold, participation in OTC derivative markets, large corporate borrowers, and certain cross-border transactions.
Unlike PAN or CIN which are India-specific, the LEI is issued by accredited Local Operating Units (LOUs) under the Global LEI Foundation and is recognised internationally, which is why it's specifically required for cross-border and derivative transactions where counterparties need a globally consistent way to identify the entity.
Once issued, an LEI is not permanent — it must be renewed annually, and lapses if not renewed, which can block the very transactions it was obtained for. See our dedicated LEI Registration Services page for the application and renewal process itself.

Our Process
Applicability Review
We check your transaction types against RBI's LEI-mandated categories to confirm whether an LEI is required.
Threshold Confirmation
Payment values and transaction categories are checked against current RBI thresholds for RTGS/NEFT and derivative trades.
LOU Selection
We identify the appropriate Local Operating Unit through which the LEI application should be filed.
Application Handover
Documentation is prepared and handed to our LEI Registration Services process for filing (see that page for the full process).
Renewal Planning
An annual renewal reminder is set up from the date of issuance so the LEI doesn't lapse mid-transaction.
