The Professional Tax Registration Certificate (PTRC) is the mandatory employer-side registration under the state Professional Tax Act. Every employer who has employees working in a PT-applicable state is required to obtain PTRC registration and thereafter: deduct the applicable PT from each employee's salary every month (or half-year, depending on the state); remit the collected PT to the state PT authority by the prescribed due date; and file the PTRC return disclosing the employee-wise deductions and payments. The PTRC registration must be obtained within 30 days of hiring the first employee in the state.

In Maharashtra, PTRC registration is obtained online on the MahaGST portal. The application requires the employer's PAN, the employer entity's registration details (Certificate of Incorporation for companies, partnership deed for firms, or personal details for proprietorships), the address of the principal place of business, bank account details for PT remittance, and details of the authorised signatory with digital signature. Once submitted, the PTRC application is processed by the PT department and the PTRC certificate with a unique registration number is issued electronically — typically within 3 to 7 working days in Maharashtra.

PTRC registration is a prerequisite for PT deduction from employees — PT cannot be legally deducted and held without a valid PTRC registration. An employer who deducts PT from employees without a PTRC is in violation of the PT Act and is subject to penalty. Similarly, an employer who hires staff in a new state must obtain a fresh PTRC in that state before deducting PT from the employees located there. We manage PTRC registration for new businesses, multi-state employers, and companies expanding to new state locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

PTRC (Professional Tax Registration Certificate) is the employer's registration under the state PT Act. Every employer who employs persons in a PT-applicable state and deducts PT from their salaries must obtain PTRC in that state. This includes companies, LLPs, partnerships, trusts, and proprietorships. PTRC must be obtained within 30 days of hiring the first employee.
Yes. The PTRC obligation arises from the act of employing persons and deducting PT from their salaries — regardless of the number of employees. Even a company with a single employee earning above the minimum PT slab threshold must obtain PTRC and file monthly returns. There is no minimum employee count exemption for PTRC.
Required documents include: PAN of the employer entity; Certificate of Incorporation (for companies/LLPs), partnership deed (for firms), or Aadhaar/PAN for proprietorships; address proof of principal place of business (utility bill, property tax receipt, or rent agreement not older than 3 months); bank account details (cancelled cheque or bank statement); and authorised signatory details with a valid digital signature certificate (Class 2 or Class 3 DSC).
PTRC registration in Maharashtra is typically processed within 3 to 7 working days of filing the online application with complete documents on the MahaGST portal. The certificate is issued electronically and can be downloaded from the portal immediately after approval — there is no physical certificate dispatch.
Under the Maharashtra PT Act, failure to obtain PTRC within the prescribed 30-day period is an offence. A penalty of up to ₹2,000 plus ₹10 per day of continuing default may be levied. Additionally, if PT was deducted from employees without a valid PTRC, the employer is in violation of the Act and liable for the full amount of PT collected — plus interest at 1.25% per month — as if it were unremitted PT.
Yes. PTRC is state-specific — a separate PTRC registration is required in each PT state where the employer has employees. A company with employees in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh needs three separate PTRC registrations — one in each state — each filed on the respective state's portal and with state-specific documents and due dates.
