Form 10B — Trust Audit Report. Filed Before the Deadline.

Form 10B is the prescribed audit report for trusts, institutions, and funds registered under Section 12A/12AB. We audit accounts, prepare the report, and file it within the due date to protect exemption status.

Charitable and religious trusts and institutions registered under Section 12A or Section 12AB of the Income Tax Act, 1961 must have their accounts audited if the total income — before the exemption under Section 11 — exceeds the basic exemption limit. The audit report must be furnished in Form 10B, certified by a Chartered Accountant, and filed on the income tax e-filing portal before the return filing due date.

Form 10B is not merely a procedural compliance — it is the document that supports the trust’s claim to exemption under Section 11. The auditor certifies the application of income towards the trust’s objects, the accumulation of income under Section 11(2), the maintenance of proper books of accounts, and compliance with the conditions of registration. An adverse or qualified Form 10B can invite scrutiny and jeopardise the exemption claim.

We conduct the audit of the trust’s accounts, prepare the Form 10B report with all required annexures and schedules, and file it on the e-filing portal well before the return due date. We also advise on compliance with the conditions of exemption — application of income, restricted accumulation, and investment in specified modes — during the audit process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trusts and institutions registered under Section 12A or Section 12AB must file Form 10B if their total income before exemption exceeds the basic exemption limit (₹3 lakh for AY 2024–25 onwards). Trusts below this threshold are not required to get their accounts audited.
Form 10B must be filed before the due date for filing the trust’s return of income — which is 31 October (where audit is required) or 30 September (for non-audit cases). Filing the audit report after the return results in the exemption claim being denied for that year.
If the Form 10B audit report is not filed within the due date, the trust’s income is not eligible for exemption under Section 11 for that year and the entire income becomes taxable. A penalty under Section 271B may also be levied for failure to furnish the audit report.
A trust registered under Section 12A/12AB must apply at least 85% of its income towards the purposes of the trust (charity, religion, education, etc.) within the financial year. If application falls short, the unapplied portion loses exemption unless the trust files Form 10 for accumulation under Section 11(2).
Yes. Under Section 11(2), a trust can accumulate income for up to 5 years by filing Form 10 before the return due date, specifying the purpose and period of accumulation. The accumulated amount must be invested in specified modes under Section 11(5) and must be utilised for the declared charitable purpose within 5 years.
Form 10B applies to trusts and institutions registered under Section 12A/12AB with income above the basic exemption limit. Form 10BB applies to educational and medical institutions claiming exemption under Section 10(23C) — a separate exemption provision with different conditions and a different audit form.
