Income tax e-filing is the annual obligation every taxpayer in India must meet — individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, partnership firms, LLPs, and companies alike. The Income Tax Department has mandated electronic filing for virtually all categories of taxpayers, and the portal at incometax.gov.in is where returns are submitted, verified, and processed. Getting it right the first time matters: a wrong form, a missed schedule, or an unverified return can trigger notices, delayed refunds, and penalties that a properly filed return would have avoided entirely.

The landscape is more complex than it looks on the surface. Seven different ITR forms apply to different taxpayer profiles. The Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) now pre-fill data the department already has — discrepancies between what you report and what they see are a primary trigger for scrutiny. Deductions under Sections 80C through 80U must be correctly claimed with supporting documentation. Capital gains from equities, mutual funds, property, and unlisted shares each carry their own holding period rules and tax rates.

At NDS Advisors, we handle the full e-filing cycle — from gathering documents and reconciling Form 26AS and AIS to preparing the return, computing tax, and completing e-verification. Every return we file is reviewed for accuracy before submission, and we stay with you through any post-filing notices or assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Income tax e-filing is the process of submitting your Income Tax Return (ITR) electronically via the Income Tax Department's portal (incometax.gov.in). It is mandatory for individuals, HUFs, and entities earning above the basic exemption limit, and is the only accepted mode of filing for most taxpayers today.
For individuals and HUFs not requiring audit, the due date is 31st July of the assessment year. For taxpayers whose accounts are subject to audit, the deadline is 31st October. Belated returns can be filed up to 31st December with interest and penalty under Section 234F.
Key documents include PAN, Aadhaar, Form 16 (from employer), Form 26AS and AIS (tax credit statements), bank statements, capital gains statements, investment proofs for deductions under Chapter VI-A, and details of foreign assets or foreign income if applicable.
Filing after the due date attracts a late fee of ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if total income is below ₹5 lakh) under Section 234F, plus interest on any tax due under Sections 234A, 234B, and 234C. Carry-forward of most losses is also forfeited for late filers.
Yes. An ITR is not processed until e-verified. E-verification can be done via Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank ATM, Demat account, or by sending a signed physical ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru within 30 days of filing.
